A problem with solutions
Improving the state of the Finnish Archipelago Sea is a big challenge. The nutrient load causing eutrophication should be minimized.
Solution models can be found through collaboration, decisive action and putting research results into practice on a concrete level. The better quality of surface waters during dry summers with less inflow gives us hope: we can redirect the course of development of the Archipelago Sea by decreasing the nutrient load from rivers.
Effective measures to resuscitate the Archipelago Sea presuppose significant funding. The financial instruments at hand such as the EU agricultural environment support system are not sufficient. Other means of financing are needed to rapidly launch sizable ventures to redirect the development of the Archipelago Sea.
The Protection Fund for the Archipelago Sea focuses on battling eutrophication. We strive to change the state of the sea with concrete measures, guidance work for water protection and following up on research results and making use of them.
Our action plan for years 2008-2010 concentrates on four themes:
- Reducing nutrient loading from agriculture
- Reducing loading from waste waters
- Reducing negative effects of boating
- Supporting awareness and research
