Markus Aarnio works in the Finnish Defence Command Planning Division as the Representative of the Commander of the Navy.
Director Esko ANTOLA, Centrum Balticum
Esko Antola is the Director of Centrum Balticum, a think tank on Baltic Sea Issues. He is Jean Monnet Professor ad personam and Advisor to Dr. Olli Rehn, Member of the European Commission. He has published extensively on European institutions and is currently engaged in projects on Baltic Sea politics and institutions.
Executive Secretary Anne Christine BRUSENDORFF, Helsinki Commission
Anne Christine Brusendorff has been the Executive Secretary of the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (the Helsinki Commission) since 2003. She has specialized in International Environmental Law and International Law of the Sea.
Research Fellow Zsolt DARVAS, Bruegel
Zsolt Darvas is a Research Fellow at Bruegel. He is also a Research Fellow at the Institute of Economics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Associate Professor at the Corvinus University of Budapest. His research interests include macroeconomics, international economics, central banking and time series analysis.
Member of Parliament Eero HEINÄLUOMA, Vice-chairman, Delegation for the Year 1809 Project
Eero Heinäluoma is a member of the Parliament of Finland and former Minister of Finance. He is Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Commitee and Defence Committee. He is also a Deputy Member in Finnish Delegation to the Nordic Council and one of the Auditors of the Bank of Finland. Before been elected to Parliament Heinäluoma worked in Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) as a Director.
Professor Bernd HENNINGSEN, Nordeuropa-Institut, Humboldt Universität
Bernd Henningsen is the founder and director of the Department for Northern European Studies at Humboldt University, Berlin, where he holds a chair for cultures and politics in Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea Region. He is Honorary Professor at the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen.
Head of Research Unit Hans MOURITZEN, Danish Institute for International Affairs
Hans Mouritzen is a Senior Researcher and Head of Research Unit on Foreign Policy and EU Studies. His expertise are geopolitics and foreign policy, democracy vs. elitism in foreign policy, 'small state' adaptation, IGOs, and security communities including stability projection. He is an editor of "Danish Foreign Policy Yearbook”.
Senior Diplomatic Correspondent Jarmo MÄKELÄ, Finnish Broadcasting Co. (moderator)
Jarmo Mäkelä is a Senior Diplomatic Correspondent of the Finnish Broadcasting Co., Yle. He has covered foreign news for the Yle TV News since 1981. His latest posting was in Brussels, where he worked as the Bureau Chief and correspondent in 2005-2009. His previous foreign postings include Moscow and Bonn. In 1997-2001 he worked as the Press Counsellor of the Finnish Embassy in Washington DC.
Professor Artis PABRIKS, Vidzeme University College
Artis Pabriks is a Professor at the Vidzeme University College since 2006. He is also the former Foreign Minister of Latvia. He has a degree in history from the University of Latvia and a Ph.D in political science from University of Aarhus. His expertises are multiculturalism, nationalism, security policy, ethnic policy, ideologies, gender issues, and human rights. He is an author and co-author of a number of books and many publications.
Professor Bengt SUNDELIUS, Swedish National Defence College
Bengt Sundelius is Head of the Department of Security and Strategy of the Swedish National Defence College and Professor of Government, Uppsala University. He was recently (2004-08) Chief Scientist of the Swedish Emergency Management Agency. He was the founding Director of the National Centre for Crisis Management Research & Training (CRISMART) of the Swedish National Defence College. He has been a professor of political science and Director of the International Graduate School of University of Stockholm (1985-92), Head of the Security and Foreign Policy Research Program of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (1993-97) and Director of Research for Security Policy at the Swedish National Defence Research Establishment (1997-99). He has published eighteen books and numerous articles on European security and foreign policy issues.
Director Paweł ŚWIEBODA, demosEUROPA – Centre for European Strategy
Pawel Swieboda worked as Advisor to the President of Poland on EU issues in the years 1996-2000. He then headed the Office for European Integration in the Chancellery of the President. In the years 2001-2006 he served as Director of the Department of the European Union in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is the author of numerous articles on issues of European integration and international relations.
Director Dmitri TRENIN, Carnegie Endowment, Moscow
Dmitri Trenin has been with the Carnegie Endowment Center since ts inception. He retired from the Russian Army in 1993. From 1993-1997, he held posts as a Senior Research Fellow at the NATO Defense College in Rome and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Europe in Moscow.
