Expert Conference:
The Future of the Baltic Sea Region in Europe
27-28 August 2009, Hamina, Finland
Two hundred years have passed since the Peace Treaty between Sweden and Russia was signed in the south-eastern Finnish town of Hamina. The Treaty marked a turning point in the history of the Finnish nation; over 600 years of state unity with Sweden ceased to exist and Finland became an autonomous Grand Duchy as a part of Russia.
The new autonomous status launched a vigorous effort for building a nation, which culminated in gaining the full sovereignty and independence in 1917.
To commemorate the events 200 years ago and to enhance the international discussion on currently vital issues of our region, the Year 1809 Committee of the Prime Minister's Office organises an international expert conference on the theme “The future of the Baltic Sea Region in Europe”.
The purpose of the conference is to evaluate the future of the Baltic Sea Region in a long term perspective. The selected themes of the conference will be addressed by high-level experts. They will examine the Baltic Sea Region in the European context, its economic challenges, ecological sustainability as well as safety and security issues of the region. The aim of the exchange of views is to provide the participants with fresh ideas and new perspectives for future cooperation.
The conference will convene on 27-28 August 2009 in Hamina, Finland. On this website you will find additional information on programme, venues, and practical arrangements (accommodation and transport) on the conference.
The conference is organised by the Year 1809 Committee in cooperation with the Treaty of Hamina Anniversary 2009 Project and the Centrum Balticum.
Please note that the number of participants at the conference is limited.
You are cordially welcome to Hamina!
